Beware!
Of the unlicensed plumber.
Unlicensed means unqualified

The licensed plumbing contractor in Connecticut has gone through a process to ensure that they have the qualifications, experience, and necessary knowledge to properly install and maintain your plumbing system. To receive a plumbing license in Connecticut an applicant must have a minimum of 5 years working under the supervision of a CT licensed master plumber. Once their application is approved by the State Licensing Board they must pass a comprehensive written examination and pass the test with a score of 70 or greater. Plumbing systems are becoming more and more complex due to an ever changing plumbing code designed for public safety. Precautions must be taken to prevent the contamination of potable water systems and prevent cross connections to the drainage system. Relief valves must be kept in working order on hot water heaters and boilers to ensure the well being of your family.

When you hire a licensed plumber you receive the benefit of all this knowledge and training. If you had a medical problem or legal problem you would not even think about going to an unlicensed doctor or lawyer. The same is true with plumbers. Fixing a minor leak or repairing a faucet may seem like a minor task and in most cases is. However having the know how to detect bigger problems from smaller problems is where the true value is. The availability of many plumbing products at the retail level today has paved the way for many unqualified individuals with a little knowledge to perform illegal plumbing. Beware of these individuals because they are not only operating in violation of CT law but they often don't have liability insurance. Be especially careful in remodeling projects when you hire a general contractor to remodel your kitchen or bathroom and they perform the plumbing themselves. They can't legally apply for a plumbing permit on such projects unless the permit is signed and sealed by a licensed plumber. If they ask you to sign a permit application that means they are asking you to be responsible as the homeowner for plumbing work they are illegally doing. Every licensed plumber in CT must be insured. The next time someone offers to do your plumbing be sure to ask for their license number. It must be displayed by the plumber in all forms of advertising including their truck under CT law

If you have any suspicions about an unlicensed plumber check with your local code official. Not only is hiring the licensed plumber the smart thing to do... it's the law.
